Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC)

PVC has been a product that has seen both great performance and disastrous performance. Because PVC is a non flexible material that is susceptible to ultraviolet deterioration, PVC roof membranes rely on plasticizers for flexibility and additives for UV protection. PVC sheets are manufactured in a variety of ways with a wide variety of plasticizers used.

Advantages - Because it is a thermoplastic, seams are heat welded together. A few manufacturers who use high quality plasticizers have a long track record of superior performance. Product is available in a number of colors and some have PVC ribs to give the appearance of a standing seam metal roof.

Disadvantages - Proper membrane formulations have proven to be an expensive process, resulting in a higher membrane costs than other single ply systems. Choosing the right manufacturer is even more important with this product. Some PVC membranes are highly susceptible to hail damage.
